Cheap chinese O Ring flash adapter review and how to do it yourself better

Hi,
if you like me were looking for a portrait and macro O ring flash maybe will understand why i was astonished from the high prices of the brand names, like Canon for example. Well in fact i was also surprised with other prices, so at the end i have got to the conclusion to buy a cheap Chinese imitation O ring  adapter sold under the name Macro O Flash for NIKON SB800 + D70S D300 D200 F160 also sold for Canon and so on. cheapest price was 25e shipped to where  i live.

First thing to tell you that there are different measures and models and the idea is to measure your camera and flash and the model should be bought so that at the end the lens would be exactly in the center of the O. So measure carefully before you buy.
My flash is Nissin 866 /same measures as Canon 580ex  series not only at this case but about all the accessories possible/  and my camera is Canon 550D so the model i bought is F160

My first impressions were that for the money is solid build but of course with some obvious mistakes. The biggest mistake was that they putt a non reflective paper to show their brand and that because of this there is a significant loss of light which makes it unusable for model photography. Yes, not enough light transmission. Luckily it can be easily corrected and i will show you how.

So, lets do it!

here is the box it came in

now you take it apart. carefully with your fingers take off the front transparent cover, take of the paper with the logo and that's what you have

this is the non reflecting paper in question which is guilty for the light loss

and look below at the black non reflecting plastic inside

now go to your kitchen and take some aluminum foil

take  scissors and instant glue and glue it to the Matte side of the foil

cut it carefully with the scissors

put it carefully at its place

as it overlaps the non reflective black plastic as you can see from the photo below now it would transmit the light as it should have at the first place. but thank god that is cheap...

Now some tests to see if it was worth

with flash pointing towards the ceiling

direct flash

with our DIY bettered O ring flash adapter

now one in fron of the mirror to see the light distribution. i did not made one before to compare but beleive me it was much worse, other wise i wouldn't waste my and your time

and 2 macro shots. definitely you have some shadow, depends how you put the camera towards the object. so for macro shots you don't loose creativity

so my conclusion is that its worth the money and may be better than trying to make a ring flash from other domestic appliances like cooking pans and so on which of course can render better result with studio flash heads. so check it!

  1. Wow, the company must have read your blog entry! I just took mine apart (14 Apr 2013, purchased some months prior) and the paper piece's back side is fully metalized, i.e. it's already at least as good a reflector as you'd get from foil.

  2. Thank you for the article.
Great idea to replace Company's logo with "metalic" paper.
